Today, we begin a new series presenting cricket skills, techniques, tactics, and styles. The aim of this series is to add to the knowledge that our young cricketers learn about the game. For experienced players, it provides an opportunity to reassess and challenge existing views.
The first is on the batting technique that has made Steve Smith legendary. Many of us will recognise Smith’s technique as the one we learnt in our younger days, which allowed us to face both short-pitched and full deliveries with equal ease. However there was a period of a decade or more, where this technique went out of fashion. This was the technique that I learnt from George Tribe in the 1970s. Cricket skills evolve over the years and sometimes the basics need to be continually revisited.
